Bust Your Confidence: Self-Evaluation Test
The uncertainty after taking an exam can be overwhelming. Have I passed? How many questions did I answer correctly? To address these concerns with greater confidence, I have developed a simple yet effective technique called Personal Exam Self-Assessment. This tool enables you to estimate, with considerable accuracy, whether you have passed a multiple-choice exam by evaluating your confidence level for each answer. Below, I explain how this method works and how you can easily implement it.
The Personal
Exam Self-Assessment involves
analyzing each question you answer during the exam and assigning a certainty percentage
level to it. To apply this technique, you can use an Excel spreadsheet designed
to record up to 100 questions, or you can adapt it to a blank sheet of paper.
Simply write down your confidence levels as follows: Q1 = X%, Q2 = X%, and
so on for the total number of questions in the exam. This process can help you
gauge your performance more accurately even before receiving your results.
Self-assessment Structure
The self-assessment sheet is organized
into columns that represent your level of confidence in each answer:
|
Q # |
100% |
75% |
50% |
25% |
|
1 |
x |
|
|
|
- 100% safe: If you are absolutely certain that a question
is correct, mark an X in the 100% column.
- 75% safe: If you are highly confident in your answer but
not completely certain, mark an X in the 75% column.
- 50% safe: If you have considerable doubt but believe your
answer has a reasonable chance of being correct, mark an X in the 50%
column.
- 25% safe: If you answered intuitively or without much
confidence, mark an X in the 25% column.
- At the end
of the exam first, review all the questions marked in the 25% column.
- Then, if time permits, review
those marked in the 50% column.
- Do not review questions
assigned to the 75% or 100% columns.
Repeat this process for every question, ensuring that you assign only one X per question to one of the four columns. Discipline is essential for obtaining accurate results.
I emphasize the last point again:
You will never
review questions marked between 75% and 100%.
How to Interpret
the Results
At the end of
your self-assessment, count the number of responses in each confidence level.
Example:
- If you have 75 questions
distributed between the 100% and 75% columns, you can feel confident that
you passed the exam.
- However, if the majority of
your answers fall into the 50% and 25% columns (e.g., 60 questions), it is
likely that you did not pass.
This technique provides a highly accurate prediction of your results, giving you a clear sense of your performance before receiving the official score. It is recommended to practice this technique during the months of preparation for exams, such as state licensing tests. Taking two or three practice tests at home using this method can significantly enhance your readiness for the actual exam.
Practical
Application
During an
official exam, you won’t be able to use an Excel sheet. However, you can
quickly note your confidence levels on a blank sheet of paper. For example:
- Q1 100%, Q2 75%, Q3 50%, etc. (Q =
Question)
This habit helps
you estimate your results, reduce anxiety, and build confidence for future
exams.
Using this
method, I have successfully completed numerous exams, often knowing in advance
that I had passed.
The " Personal Exam Self-Assessment" is a simple yet powerful tool that enables you to accurately estimate your performance. By incorporating this technique into your exam routine, you will develop a clearer understanding of your results and improve your confidence over time. Consistent practice will enhance your ability to answer confidently and approach any exam with greater focus and preparation. Certainty in your performance is within reach through discipline and effective preparation!
