Be the Master of Your Domain: Decoding the Zero-Sum Game

The path to academic or professional success is seldom straightforward. Achieving goals such as obtaining a professional license or completing a college degree demands significant sacrifices, tough decisions, and unwavering dedication to your studies. Success often resembles a "zero-sum game," where gaining something—like the time needed to study and prepare—requires giving up other activities or daily pleasures. Next, I will share my personal experiences and the lessons I learned from overcoming these challenges. Together, we will explore how sacrifices, discipline, and conscious decision-making can pave the way to achieving goals that may seem unattainable. This journey is not easy, but with the right mindset and determination, any obstacle can be conquered.

Both attending college classes or courses and preparing for exams fit within the framework of a "zero-sum game": to achieve something, you must forgo or stop doing something else. This is a deeply personal decision that only you can make. In this process, responsibility and commitment play an essential role. Studying and dedicating time to your education often requires altering habits and making lifestyle adjustments. This includes setting aside time to read books, complete assignments, write summaries, create flashcards, or record and review study materials. If, like many of my students, you have to work to make a living, you will need to decide how many hours you can allocate to studying after work—sacrificing activities such as watching TV, socializing with friends, or even spending time with your family. It all comes down to prioritizing: identifying what you are willing to set aside to dedicate the necessary time to study and achieve your goal. Success in passing an exam or earning a degree is rarely free; it comes at a price, often accompanied by significant personal sacrifices. Making these choices requires courage, but the reward is undoubtedly worth the effort. This perspective is not just theoretical—it stems from my personal experiences as a student. For six months before my state real estate exam, I followed a disciplined daily routine. I woke up every day at 6 a.m. to run, eat breakfast, shower, and head to work. After work, I spent 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. exclusively studying, regardless of how exhausted I felt. My weekends were no exception. On Saturdays and Sundays, after exercising, cleaning, and completing household chores, I dedicated long hours to my studies. During this time, I gave up my social life, stopped going out with friends, and even saw my personal relationships suffer. Nevertheless, I remained focused on my goal, fully aware that these sacrifices were necessary to move forward.

As I pursued additional academic achievements, such as earning multiple college degrees, the decisions became even tougher. When I started my first master's program, I left full-time employment and became a full-time student, accruing student debt that exceeded $121,000. Despite the financial strain and personal sacrifices, this decision allowed me to fully commit to my studies. While studying full-time, I worked part-time as a driver for two well-known apps and launched a successful eBay business. These efforts helped alleviate the financial burden, but I never lost sight of my primary goal: completing my education.

For those considering a return to academics after an extended break, it is entirely possible. However, it’s crucial to recognize that this path requires sacrifices. Before enrolling in a course or pursuing a degree, ask yourself if you are willing to put aside your social life and fully dedicate yourself to your academic aspirations. Academic and professional success goes beyond talent and knowledge—it demands sacrifices, tough choices, and steadfast determination. To achieve your goals, you must be willing to trade certain comforts and habits for discipline and focus. Although the journey may seem daunting and full of challenges, the rewards of your efforts are profound and life-changing. If you are willing to make the necessary sacrifices and remain passionate about your ambitions, there are no limits to what you can achieve. Success is attainable for those who dare to fully commit to their goals. Prioritize your dreams and prove that every effort is worth it!
