Building a Strong Bond With Your Counselor

One of the highlights of my experience at Broward College was the relationship I developed with my guidance counselor. This professional played a crucial role in guiding me in selecting the classes necessary to complete my degree. As an adult student, it is essential to find a counselor who understands your particular situation and needs, enabling you to make informed decisions aligned with your academic and personal goals.

To make the most of your meetings with an advisor, it is advisable to schedule an appointment before the start of each semester, ideally prior to enrolling in new classes. While the counselor possesses in-depth knowledge of your career options, it is equally important to conduct your own research. Exploring the college or university website to identify courses of interest and the ideal time to take them is a valuable step. This combined approach ensures that the counselor’s advice complements your personal analysis, allowing you to make sound decisions. Ultimately, you bear the responsibility of financing your education and managing any student loans.

I recall one semester in particular when I encountered an unexpected challenge. I had made an appointment with my regular counselor, but due to their absence, I met with a different advisor. This substitute counselor attempted to persuade me to enroll in an algebra class that was unnecessary according to the academic plan established with my regular counselor. My degree in Political Science or History required only two college-level mathematics classes. Aware of my goals and rights, I chose to leave the meeting and adhere to the plan previously defined with my regular counselor. This experience reinforced my belief that adult learners must take control of their own educational journey by making informed decisions and advocating for their interests.

In conclusion, meeting with your academic advisor and managing your academic transcripts effectively are critical steps toward academic success in the United States. As an adult learner, being proactive, researching your options, and making informed decisions are essential for optimizing your time, resources, and educational experience. Through strategic planning and self-confidence, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your academic and professional goals.
