As an example, below is the grievance process of Florida Atlantic University. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) provides structured procedures for students to address their complaints and ensure fair and equitable resolutions. The complaint process varies depending on the nature of the problem.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has established specific procedures to address various types of grievances, ensuring a fair and equitable process for all students. Below is an overview of the grievance processes for academic complaints, non-academic complaints, and discrimination and harassment complaints.

Academic Complaints (Grade Reviews)

If a student believes a final course grade was assigned due to a computational or recording error, the application of non-academic criteria, or a gross violation of the instructor’s grading statement, the following steps should be taken:

1.      Meeting with Instructor: The student should request a meeting with the instructor to discuss the grade. This request must be made by October 1 for grades from the previous spring or summer semester, or by February 1 for grades from the previous fall semester.

2.      Conference with Chair/Director: If unresolved, the student may request a conference with the chair of the department or director of the school/program. This written request must be submitted by November 1 for spring or summer grades, or by March 1 for fall grades.

3.      Appeal to the Dean: Should the issue remain unresolved; the student can appeal to the dean of the college administering the course. The appeal must be filed within five business days of receiving the chair/director’s findings.

4.      Appeal to the Provost (or Designee): If still dissatisfied, the student may appeal to the University Provost (or designee) within five business days of receiving the dean’s notification.

Non-Academic Complaints

For grievances unrelated to academic matters, students are encouraged to report their concerns through the appropriate university channels. FAU provides a platform for reporting various issues, including conduct violations and general concerns for community well-being. Reports can be submitted online.

Discrimination and Harassment Complaints

FAU is committed to maintaining an environment free from discrimination and harassment. Students who believe they have experienced such conduct should contact the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX (OCR9). OCR9 oversees investigations and resolutions of all reports of prohibited discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct.
